A barnstar for you![edit]

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
Thanks a lot for your efforts and kind help to search for the Hamburg recording of Jana Gana Mana and upload that to Wikimedia Commons. Love from India. Bodhisattwa (talk) 14:53, 17 February 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Wow – thank you very much, Bodhisattwa! --Gnom (talk) 15:41, 17 February 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Steamboat Willie[edit]

Hi, It was already uploaded, but then deleted: Commons:Deletion requests/Steamboat Willie. Yann (talk) 21:08, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Yann, you are a legend – thank you so much for finding this! Is there a chance for me to see the specific versions of the film that were deleted in 2019? Specifically, what is the resolution and duration of the two files? I am asking because we might want to find better versions to upload before and to display as MOTD on 1 January. Gnom (talk) 23:05, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This video is from [1]. The resolution is 480 x 360. I doubt we will find anything better before January. Later may be... Yann (talk) 12:14, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann: Thank you – well, there is a DVD/Bluray version available, and I am trying to find someone to help me extract it from there... Gnom (talk) 12:37, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Yann and @Racconish, just to clarify: Is File:Steamboat Willie (1928) by Walt Disney.webm the 1080p version from Disney Video? If yes, then I understand that this is the best available version which we should be using to celebrate Public Domain Day on 1 January 2024, correct? Thank you! Gnom (talk) 10:21, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I hadn't the time to check. Racconish deleted it before. ;oP Yann (talk) 10:30, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes it is. — Racconish💬 15:01, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Racconish: Great, thank you! Gnom (talk) 23:39, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"to be undeleted just before midnight"[edit]

Could you please clarify "midnight"? From discussion at commons and at archive.org it seems to be very unsure, if this file becomes PD at 0:00 EST, or 0:00 PST. As far as I know the MOTD changes at 0:00 UTC - at a time when the file in question has not yet entered public domain?

(About the DVD-version: someone could check if the transcode from the DVD to webm retains the optimal format. If I had the original file from the DVD, I could create a high quality transcode) C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:33, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@C.Suthorn: I'd be happy to have a DVD purchased and sent to you, if required. Regarding your question: Intertemporal copyright law is a very under-studied field. We will have to simply go with UTC to not overcomplicate things. Gnom (talk) 23:45, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@C.Suthorn: I had the same question, and asked Luis Villa (former WMF deputy GC), there are some interesting responses to his Mastodon post (in summary: it's unclear, of course :)). Legoktm (talk) 19:01, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Legoktm @Gnom I didn't read the whole fediverse thread (its the night of 31 december), but what about the precautionary principle of WM? C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 19:58, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't believe there is "significant doubt about the freedom of a particular file", to quote COM:PCP. Legoktm (talk) 20:04, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
